During the first few months of my relationship with Rob everything was lovely but things changed quickly. We were together in total for around eight years, which I now realise was because I thought the abuse was part of a normal relationship.

Rob was very controlling and soon became physically abusive. I’d always forgive him because he’d apologise and I loved him. I even forgave him when he threw me down the stairs whilst I was pregnant.

From there things just kept getting worse. I remember my oldest son asking me one day if I was going to die. At that point I knew I had to get us away from him and get help but I just didn’t know where to turn.

During that final month with him, my neighbours probably called the police more than 20 times. The last time they were called was the day Rob had attacked me and threatened to throw acid in my face. The police officers explained they couldn’t leave me and my children and I had to go into refuge right there and then. We were all still in our pyjamas when we arrived.

It’s a struggle to admit but even at that point I still felt defensive of him because in my mind I loved him and wanted to be with him.

Living in the Llamau refuge alongside these other women who’ve struggled with abuse as well has really helped change my life. My support worker Alma has been amazing so thanks to her and the support of the other women here, I’m in a much better place. Obviously I still have my down days and can struggle with my emotions but I know I can always talk to someone.

I have no contact with Rob now and thanks to Llamau we’ve all been taken care of. They ensured my children have been supported in a way that’s right for them, alongside supporting me every step of the way. I can’t thank them enough!
