Sian James Sian is the former MP for Swansea East. Raised in a Welsh speaking, mining community of Ystradgynlais. Sian began her political journey during the 1984/1985 Miners' Strike. The strike ended and she enrolled on a degree course at Swansea University, graduating in 1989. Sian then embarked on a career that has encompassed both the public and private sectors in Wales. Sian’s political involvement with the Labour Party also continued to grow during this period. In 2005 she was elected to Westminster, Sian enjoyed her time as a backbencher but felt it was time to get back to campaigning roots. In 2015 Sian stood down from her seat to pursue other interests, such as supporting wider involvement in community action, encouraging greater participation in politics and raising awareness of issues affecting women, young people and children.
