Befriending can lead to new opportunities in life and helps women to grow in confidence and self-esteem. 

We are looking to work with volunteers who can befriend women Llamau are supporting, either in their own homes or within our refuges. Befriending can help to motivate women to access community services and engage in social activities, enabling them to build good relationships, make new friends and strengthen their community involvement. 

You will be offering emotional support and encouragement to our women and families which will help build their confidence, self-esteem and independence and encourage them to make their own decisions. The knowledge and experience you bring to the role will help women and their families to take positive steps towards a happier, healthier future. 


Time Commitment

Roughly 2-3 hours every week or fortnight. This could be more depending on your availability.

How you can help

To offer additional support to women and families supported by Llamau. Help build their self-esteem, self-confidence and emotional well-being. This will assist them in developing healthy relationships and pursuits which in the longer term will support their transition towards independence.  

Possible Tasks

  • Encourage Women and families to participate within activities in their community.
  • Encourage Women to access employment, training and volunteering.
  • Accompany Women and families people to activities including; cinema, gym, walks,
  • Accompany young people to appointments i.e.- medical, benefits.
  • Share your skills and interests with the women ie-sport, craft, music.
  • Support women to share their plans and goals.

Qualities and Skills Required

  • An understanding of issues facing women and families who have experienced domestic abuse
  • Ability to relate to and engage women and families who have experienced domestic abuse
  • A non-judgemental, empathetic and caring attitude.
  • A good communicator, understanding the importance of listening effectively.
  • A commitment to the ethos of the organisation, policies and procedures.
  • The ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries

You will receive a comprehensive induction, ongoing training, support and supervision. Travel and expenses for activities will be reimbursed.


Two references.
Volunteers will also need to have an enhanced DBS Check.
