When James first came to Llamau, he thought university was completely out of reach.

Despite achieving strong A-Level results, including a Distinction in BTEC Engineering and a C in Drama, James had been told he didn’t have the grades to go to university. With little guidance and confidence, he felt his life was on hold, unsure of how to move forward or achieve his dream of becoming an actor.

James had already been through a lot. His childhood had been overshadowed by domestic violence, and he’d faced bullying at school. Understandably, these experiences left James struggling with low confidence, anxiety and depression. Although he came across as independent and self-assured, building relationships didn’t come easily.

After a job coach suggested he look into a security course, James came to Llamau deflated and looking for direction.

He completed qualifications in Health and Safety, Career Planning, and Developing Skills for a Healthy Lifestyle, and he’d been learning how to cook for himself – something he was really excited about. He started going to the gym and taking care of himself and we saw his confidence grow. The more we got to know him, it was clear that drama and acting were his true passions.

Together, we calculated James’ UCAS tariff points, an impressive 104, well above the 96 needed for his chosen course. His face lit up when he realised he could go after all. With support from our Progression Coach, a professional reference, and a bit of guidance from a contact at the University of South Wales, James submitted his UCAS application, and we all did a little happy dance when he pressed send.

Not long after, James was invited to attend an open day and audition. We supported him with travel, practiced his monologues, helped him prepare, and even filmed audition tapes for him when we discovered his phone didn’t have a working camera. With additional funding secured for essentials like a coat, glasses and a new phone, James had everything he needed to take that next step forward.

He got in!

Since then, James has absolutely thrived. He's over halfway through his university degree and growing more confident by the day.

James’ journey is a testament to what can happen when a young person is told yes instead of no. With the right support, belief, and opportunities, he’s gone from doubting his potential to stepping into the life he always dreamed of.
