Every young person deserves the knowledge, skills and confidence to build safe, healthy relationships. Empowering futures is Llamau’s programme of trauma-informed awareness sessions and group work for children and young people aged 10–18 across Gwent.

The programme explores important questions:

  • Do young people understand what makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy?
  • Do they know how to recognise red flags?
  • How do gender expectations and social pressures affect them?

What Llamau does

Llamau’s domestic abuse children and young people (DACYP) support workers deliver interactive, engaging sessions in schools, youth groups and community settings. These sessions explore:

  • Healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Consent, sexting and respect
  • Coercion, control and spotting warning signs
  • The role of gender, stereotypes and media influence
  • Building emotional health and resilience

Our approach

Through discussion, activities and real-life scenarios, Llamau creates a safe space where young people can:

  • Talk openly about relationships and expectations
  • Challenge harmful stereotypes and social norms
  • Develop practical skills for communication and self-confidence
  • Support their friends and peers

Sessions range from one-hour workshops to longer programmes and can be tailored to the needs of each school or group. Llamau also runs activities during school holidays and offers evening and weekend sessions on request.

Group programmes

Alongside awareness sessions, Llamau offers group programmes for more in-depth support:

  • ADAPT – understanding healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • SPACE toolkit – supporting parents and children emotionally
  • PAACE toolkit – positive and adverse childhood experiences

Support for young people

When extra help is needed, the team provides:

  • Brief one-to-one interventions to assess safety and wellbeing
  • Pathways to specialist local services for ongoing support
  • Advice and guidance for staff and safeguarding teams

Youth ambassadors

Young people can also join Llamau’s youth VAWDASV rep programme – taking on a leadership role to challenge harmful norms, raise awareness and positively influence their peers.
