Homelessness can be a hidden, especially among young people. Many young people experiencing homelessness might be couch-surfing, living in temporary accommodation, or staying in unsafe environments.

If you suspect that a young person you know is experiencing or at risk of homelessness, it’s crucial to take the right steps to support them. Here's a guide on how to approach the situation and where to seek help.

1. Recognise the signs of homelessness

The first step is recognising that the young person may be in a precarious living situation. Some signs to watch out for include:

  • Inconsistent attendance - if they’re frequently absent from school or work.
  • Changes in appearance - a decline in personal hygiene or wearing the same clothes repeatedly.
  • Secrecy or vagueness - being evasive about where they’re living or staying.
  • Behavioural changes - increased anxiety, withdrawal, or signs of depression.
  • Physical symptoms - fatigue, sudden loss of weight, or unexplained injuries.

2. Approach the situation with care

It’s essential to approach the young person with sensitivity and care. They may feel ashamed, embarrassed, or fearful of judgment.

  • Find a safe space to talk - approach them in a private, comfortable setting where they can feel safe to open up.
  • Be non-judgmental - listen without making assumptions or judgments. Let them know you’re there to support, not criticise.
  • Express concern, not pity - show that you’re concerned about their well-being and want to help them find solutions.

3. Offer Practical Support

If the young person is open to discussing their situation, there are several ways you can offer practical support:

  • Direct them to local resources - they can call Llamau’s Youth Homeless Helpline, run in partnership with Shelter Cymru, free of charge, on 08000 495 495. Highly trained colleagues and volunteers will provide advice on best steps for them.
  • If someone is in immediate danger tell them to call 999
