James' Story

James grew up in a challenging environment, facing domestic violence at home and bullying at school.

Getting another chance to pursue his dreams

James grew up in a challenging environment, facing domestic violence at home and bullying at school. These experiences left him struggling to form friendships and damaged his confidence, even though he achieved good A-Level results. Owing to poor guidance, James believed his grades weren’t enough to go to university and was encouraged to pursue a security guard course, despite his ambitions lying elsewhere.

While managing his own anxiety and depression, James was also caring for his mother, who struggled with mental health issues. James felt his dream of going to university was out of reach. When he came to Llamau, James did not realise he had more than enough UCAS points to apply to university. He just needed his potential to be recognised.

Llamau always supported James. His dreams were not only valid but very possible. Llamau helped James understand his own potential, and he was able to set up his UCAS account and write his personal statement. Llamau also supported James through the student finance process and ensured he was prepared for university, helping him secure essentials like a new phone and glasses.

Through Llamau’s programmes, James gained confidence and formed friendships, participating in group activities that helped him grow. He also completed qualifications to prepare him for university life.

James is now in his second year of university, a testament to his resilience and the support he received from Llamau. His journey shows how the right support can help young people achieve their full potential.
