When Kian first came to Llamau for post 16 education, he was struggling with confidence, routine and direction. Having left school with very few qualifications and inconsistent attendance, Kian was not in education, employment or training. Living in foster care, he had also faced instability at home and a poor sleep routine which made engaging with education even harder.
At first, Kian’s attendance was low and he risked being expelled from his course. With encouragement, wake-up calls and support to build a routine, he gradually increased his education hours. He went on to attend four days a week and even completed extra work at home. Alongside this, Kian received counselling and took part in workshops on wellbeing, money management and employability, which helped him build resilience and prepare for the future.
Kian began to thrive, taking part in extra activities such as coding workshops, volunteering and wellbeing days. He became a positive influence on his course welcoming new learners and suggesting ways to strengthen the student voice. Kian’s growing confidence also saw him apply for his first job and reaching the final stage of the interview process.
"Thanks to Llamau I now have the qualifications I need to progress in the future – whether it be college or employment."
Reflecting on his progress, Kian said: “There aren’t enough words or phrases to describe how much this past year has changed me into the more focused and hardworking person I am today. Thanks to Llamau I now have the qualifications I need to progress in the future – whether it be college or employment.”
In September this year, Kian started college, equipped with the confidence and skills to succeed.
