When women are safe, communities thrive

International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate women’s achievements, resilience and leadership. It is also a reminder that, in Wales, safety and stability are still out of reach for too many women.

6th March 2026

Homelessness and domestic abuse are deeply connected, and women are often the ones who feel this most sharply. Many women experience hidden homelessness, staying with friends, sofa surfing, or remaining in unsafe situations because they have been pushed into impossible choices. These are not individual failings, but the result of structural pressures such as poverty, a lack of affordable housing and the ongoing impact of abuse.

We believe that homelessness is not inevitable. It is preventable.

When women have access to safe, secure housing, the benefits ripple far beyond one person. Women are better able to heal from abuse, rebuild their confidence and take steps towards the future they want. Their children are more likely to feel secure, settle in school and thrive. Communities become stronger when women are safe, supported and able to participate fully in society.

Llamau is Wales’ leading homelessness prevention charity, working alongside women to keep them safe and, where possible, stop homelessness from happening in the first place.

When women do need somewhere safe to stay, Llamau provides safe, homely supported accommodation that is more than a roof, it is a foundation for change. Alongside this, women receive tailored, trauma-informed support to help with wellbeing, finances, housing options, and rebuilding their lives at their own pace.

This work does not happen in isolation. Ending homelessness for women in Wales requires collective effort. Partnerships with organisations, businesses and supporters are vital in helping Llamau reach more women and create lasting change.

Corporate partners play an important role, not only through fundraising, but by raising awareness, advocating for change and creating workplaces that stand in solidarity with women facing homelessness and abuse.

This is why your International Women’s Day corporate event matters. By coming together to learn, reflect and take action, you are helping to shine a light on issues that are often hidden and supporting solutions that are already making a difference in Wales. It is an opportunity to move beyond celebration and towards meaningful impact.

International Women’s Day is about equality, progress and shared responsibility. Llamau knows that when women are safe, communities thrive. By working together, it is possible to prevent homelessness and build a Wales where every woman has a safe place to call home.
