I need help talking to my local authority

You don’t have to be on the streets to get help. If you’re homeless or at risk within 56 days — for example, sofa surfing or staying somewhere temporary — your local authority must assess your situation.

When you contact your local authority, you can:

  • Make a homelessness application

  • Speak about your circumstances and needs

  • Be offered temporary accommodation if you meet certain criteria

  • Receive a written decision — you can ask for a review within 21 days if you disagree

Even if your local authority can’t offer accommodation, they must give advice and help you find somewhere to live.
