Upstream Cymru is a pioneering prevention programme proven to significantly reduce youth homelessness
An Early Intervention Initiative
Homelessness is far harder to resolve once it becomes sustained or recurring. That’s why Llamau leads Upstream Cymru, a pioneering early intervention initiative delivered in partnership with schools across Wales.
Rather than waiting until a young person presents to a local authority as homeless, Upstream Cymru identifies children and families at risk and provides tailored support before a crisis develops.
This ground-breaking programme helps young people overcome barriers to education, training and employment while providing family mediation to reduce conflict at home. By addressing challenges early, Upstream Cymru prevents relationship breakdowns that too often lead to homelessness.
Over the past four years, the Upstream Cymru programme has generated vital insights into what works to prevent youth homelessness. Llamau continues to share these lessons across the UK, championing the expansion of the Upstream model so fewer young people face homelessness.
